One Year of Cardmodelers Online: a Few Statistics

Now that CardModelers Online is one year old, I thought it would be interesting to take a look back at this past year. When you realize that this magazine is a volunteer effort--by card modelers and for card modelers-- the fact that it is still around, and growing, after a year is the ultimate measure of success. But what have we accomplished during this time?

From the beginning, the goal of the magazine was to showcase card models, whether in a detailed construction review, a collection of photos, or the "First Looks" model previews, and to cover a broad spectrum of card model subjects and publishers. How well did we meet this goal?

We published construction reviews of 50 card model kits by 36 different publishers, written by 23 reviewers. The construction reviews included 20 aircraft models, 9 architecture models, 12 ship models, and 9 vehicle models.

There were 60 photo reviews of card models, representing 30 publishers and submitted by 24 different modelers. These reviews included 23 aircraft models, 6 building models, 17 ship models, 8 vehicle models, 5 collections (several models), and 1 "other" (Birdmobile Kingfisher-- thanks Mike!).

In the monthly First Looks section, we previewed 163 models by 38 publishers. These previews included 77 aircraft models, 19 architecture models, 35 ship models, 30 vehicle models, and 2 "other".

In total, we've covered over 250 card models in one or more of the three review types, and well over 50 publishers have been represented in these reviews. The distribution of models by subject for all review types is (roughly): aircraft 45%, ships 24%, vehicles 17% and architecture 13%. I would suspect that this is more or less balanced according to general interest level in the card modeling community (and if you think your favorite type is under-represented, then write a review and send it in!).

The contributors to CardModelers Online have been the key to the consistent quantity and quality of content we've put out in the past year. Over 40 people from the international card modeling community have written reviews and articles for the magazine, all on a volunteer basis. Of these 40 contributors, over 30 have submitted 2 or more articles or reviews. I don't have any statistics on the various countries our contributors are from, but I know that "both sides of the pond" are well represented. To all of our contibutors, thank you for your efforts, keep modeling, and keep sending in those reviews!

Much of the success of CardModelers Online is due to the continued support of model publishers and dealers who have graciously supplied models for review. You will find their links at the bottom of construction reviews and at the bottom of the First Looks page. Please support these vendors as their commitment to this effort makes it possible.

Also, I'd like to take this time to thank once more all of the individuals who have donated either models or money to help keep this effort going. Your donation is greatly appreciated.

Finally, keeping all of this together and ensuring the timely and regular publication of each issue has been critical to the success of CardModelers Online, and for that we owe a great debt to Saul. His dedication and determination have made the magazine possible. On behalf of the editors, contributors, and readers of CardModelers Online-- Thanks Saul!
